Measurements matter not only to health buffs, but also to car customization enthusiasts or even ordinary car owners. What numbers have to do with vehicles, you might ask. Take your car’s rims and tires as examples. If you want to customize your vehicle, you may opt to have its rims and tires outfitted with bigger ones. Perhaps you want bigger rim tires to make your pickup or SUV look more handsome and appealing, as well as to improve its performance on the road. Now, you can’t just fit any size of rims and tires onto your vehicle. You need to know first the measurements of your vehicle’s rims and tires to aid you in future customization jobs. So how do you measure the size of your vehicle’s rim tires? There are two measurements that have to be considered for rims, while the tires that cover the wheels and rims have four. Measured in width and diameter, rim sizes are determined according to the tires that fit them. On the other hand, tire sizes are determined by getting the rim diameter, tread width, section width, and section height. Rim width ranges anywhere from 5 inches for passenger cars to 9.5 inches for trailers and trucks. Rim diameter, on the other hand, is measured from the inside groove where the tire bed is located. Measuring the rim diameter is easier if the tire is detached from the wheel.

As for the tires, their measurements are easily determined by looking on the outer sidewall. For example, if a tire’s sidewall information is P205/40R16, the P refers to the passenger car. The second figure (205) indicates the width (in millimeters) at the broadest section between the sidewalls. The next figure (40) refers to the height of the sidewalls in millimeters. The R is the radial, and the last figure indicates the rim diameter in inches.
